CAPTAIN Mark Whitehead has been dropped to the bench to make way for new signing Gareth Lewis as National II North leaders Huddersfield RU aim to continue their unbeaten run at Leicester Lions tomorrow (2.00).

The shock decision comes despite Whitehead having led his side to a 60-0 victory at home to Bradford and Bingley six days ago.

Former Huddersfield flanker Lewis rejoined the Lockwood Park club from Manchester during the close-season and makes his first start, with director of rugby Mark Sowerby explaining the move is purely tactical.

“Leicester are particularly strong up front, and Gareth offers a little bit more power in the pack,” he said.

“He’s been on the bench for the opening three games and I know he's been champing at the bit.

“It’s no reflection on how Mark’s been playing, but more a case of ‘horses for courses’.

“We were a bit disappointing in both games against Leicester last season, not taking penalties when we had the chance of them.

“But this time we are definitely stronger both mentally and physically.”
