HUDDERSFIELD RU’s director of rugby Mark Sowerby sends out three of his new signings in tomorrow’s National League II North opener at Waterloo (3.00).
South African-born Donovan Van Vuuren, ex-Leeds and Otley player Dan Hyde and winger Adam Ryder, who has joined from neighbours YMCA, are all selected, while another new recruit, Gareth Lewis, starts on the bench.
Both Hyde and Lewis started their careers with Huddersfield, and Sowerby is delighted to welcome them back.
“I’ve played against Dan before when he was at Otley, and he is a very good leader of people,” said Sowerby.
“He has already helped out with the coaching and brings some fresh ideas with him, and I’m sure he will also help out skipper Mark Whitehead.
“I also can’t wait to see how Donovan goes. He has a great deal of experience, having played with Doncaster for five years, and Cardiff Blues, and he certainly looks good in training.
“He originally came to us as a winger, but we’re playing him at full-back tomorrow, a slot which was a bit of an issue for us last season, and I’m sure his quality will shine through.”
Huddersfield now have a fair bit more cover following the recruitment of Ryder, last year’s top-scorer at YM, while Matt Clarke (shoulder) is also fit again, as is Adam Sutcliffe (knee operation).
“We have a very tough start to the season, with Caldy away the following week, our first home game against Bradford & Bingley on the 19th and then another away trip to Leicester Lions, so we really need to get away to a very good start,” added Sowerby.
“It would be nice if we can take the form we showed at the end of last season into the start of this.”
