YMCA rugby union team proved to be a cut above the rest when they entered and won the Gillette-sponsored Bridlington Sevens.

The first stage of the competition was played on a round-robin basis, and YM defeated teams from Hemsworth and the host club to qualify for the final where they defeated Malton to land the trophy.

The Laund Hill players now have a couple of weeks of inactivity before they resume pre-season training on Monday, June 7.

Tom Sharrock, who joined the club from neighbouring Huddersfield early last season, has been appointed club captain for 2010-11, with Karl Sibbons and Stephen Dyke as the joint vice-captains.

They will obviously be hoping to inspire YM to a higher-placed finish than they achieved this year when they were eighth in Yorkshire II.

At the end-of-season dinner and presentation evening, Stephen Dyke was voted the Player of the Year, Sam Hodge and Chris Beever were the trainers of the year, Josh Willans the Young player of the year, Ben Emsley, development player, while first-team scrum half Simon Wilson was chosen as the Players’ Player of the year. The final award, the Club person of the year, went to Lucy Metcalfe, who as well as the first team physio, is also the social organisers and chief fund-raiser.
