HUDDERSFIELD’S players will be viewing today’s Yorkshire Cup-tie against Bradford & Bingley as an opportunity to grab a victory first and foremost.

But against the National III North strugglers, some of the side may also be looking at the game as a chance to boost their own personal points tally.

In the 13 League games so far, Huddersfield have totalled 247 points – exactly 19 points per game – with full-back Tom Owen the leading points scorer with 77.

Owen was handed the responsibility of chief kicker following the summer departure of Chris Johnson, and has acquitted himself pretty well, having knocked over 14 successful penalties, 10 conversions and weighed in with three tries.

Unfortunately, the pacy No15 had a ‘poor day at the office’ with the boot against Dudley Kingswinford, since when he has seen the place-kicking duties passed over to fly-half Joel Hinchliffe, who has only enjoyed limited success.

No-one stands out as being an out-and-out points-scoring machine, which has been one of Huddersfield’s problems this season although centre Mike Clark is leading the try-scoring list with five, all of which have come in the last five games.

But surprisingly, he failed to notch one at all during Huddersfield’s only win against Hull, when Ben Mitchell touched down twice to bring his tally up to four in total.

Nick Sharpe has matched Owen with three tries, while Tony Stringwell, Ben Bell and the retired David Hall have each bagged a brace apiece.

So far this term Huddersfield have used 33 starters in the first team (plus five off the bench), out of which no fewer than 17 have got their names on the try-scoring chart, plus one penalty try against Darlington Mowden Park back in September.

Primarily, today’s chief task is to secure a win and put them a step nearer winning the Cup which they lifted with a magnificent performance against Hull two years ago.

But as well as the victory, it wouldn’t do the general cause any harm if they were to embark on a points spree into the bargain!
