HUDDERSFIELD Under 17s completed a great season for the Lockwood Park club, when they captured the Yorkshire (West) Floodlit Cup, beating Heath 14-3 in the final.

The Calderdale Division V side went into the match as underdogs, with Division II team Huddersfield having only conceded one try in the group stages, but it was Heath who put on the early pressure from the kick-off.

But the visitors’ defence held firm and although fly-half Tom Owen just dropped short with a long-range penalty, it was not long before they hit the front, winger Harry Rosser scoring a try in the corner.

Owen added the extras with a superb touchline conversion.

Heath tried to hit back and nearly scored at the other end, with only determined tackling keeping them out.

But with half-time approaching, Huddersfield took a stranglehold when their forwards put together a series of phases before the ball was spun out to Rosser who repeated his earlier strike, and again Owen was on target with the conversion.

Heath reduced the arrears with a penalty midway through the second half, but although they threw everything at Huddersfield, they couldn’t find a way through the line and the visitors wrapped up a splendid win to delight their large contingent of supporters.
