Huddersfield RUFC got back on track defeating Preston Grasshoppers away 31-30 in a dramatic contest.

After two disappointments against Sedgley Park and Birmingham, the victory will have boosted Huddersfield’s confidence before their next fixture against the table-toppers Hull lonians.

The game started well for Huddersfield and in the second minute Ben Mitchell put the team five points ahead after a strong run down the left.

The Grasshoppers replied in the 11th minute as Scott Jordan went in and Lewis Allen converted to put the Lancastrians two points ahead.

Sustained pressure from the Lockwood Park side followed and it resulted in a well-worked try by Austen Thompson in the 27th minute and Joel Hinchliffe’s conversion restored Field’s five point advantage.

After Allen and Hinchliffe swapped successful penalties, the two teams went into the break with the visitors still in front.

The second half was only seconds old when a try from Chris Bell put Huddersfield further ahead and Hinchliffe added the conversion.

In the 49th minute it was Hinchliffe on target again to add three more points.

Grasshoppers dug deep and made a stunning comeback to cut Field’s advantage.

Jordan went in for his second try on 53 minutes, Christopher Tailor added another touchdown just three minutes later and Samuel Russell converted to cut Field’s advantage to three points.

It was Russell who levelled the scores in the 65th minute with a penalty, but Huddersfield took the lead again in the 68th minute as Hinchliffe’s matched that shot.

That did not last long as in the 73rd minute Preston’s Mark Murray crossed giving his team the lead.

A dramatic last few minutes saw Huddersfield on the attack looking to score, and they did so in the very last seconds of the game when a penalty from Hinchliffe under pressure gave the Lockwood Park side the win.
