Highly-talented Sale Sharks rising star Liam Parfitt has today celebrated his 20th birthday by signing a dual-registration deal with Huddersfield.
The back-row forward joined the top-flight Sharks last summer from Super League club Warrington Wolves’ Academy rugby league side and was capped for England Under 18s in 2014.
The Saddleworth-based player is expected to go straight into Huddersfield’s squad for Saturday’s home National II North clash against Otley at Lockwood Park.
And Parfitt admits he can’t wait.
“I’m delighted to be here,” said Parfitt.
“I live in Saddleworth, so it’s obviously fairly close by to Huddersfield, and speaking to a few of the lads I already know from the area about the aspirations of the club and its set-up, it was an easy choice to make.
“Training has been great at Sale. We’re just coming to the end of a long pre-season, so I can’t wait to get the chance to get back playing again.
“Being alongside the likes of Dave Seymour and Dan Braid (the All Blacks open-side flanker) gave me the chance to learn a great deal, and I know their help will prove invaluable for me as I look to progress my rugby union career.
“My long-term aim is to try and cement my place in Sale’s first team in the Premiership and then, ultimately, represent England.
“But for now, I’m looking forward to doing my very best for Huddersfield.”
And Huddersfield head coach Gareth Lewis couldn’t hide his delight at signing such a promising young player.
“This is fantastic news for us,” said Lewis.
“It’s credit to the club that we can attract this calibre of player.
“From meeting Liam, it’s very clear he will buy into what we’re trying to achieve here.
“He had been recommended to us by a number of people within the game.
“He will bring added competition to an already strong area, but from my experience, competition always brings out the best in players.”
As well as being a talented rugby player in both codes, Parfitt also played cricket for Lancashire at Under 15s level and also as an all-rounder in the first team at Greenfield in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
