HUDDERSFIELD RU completed their pre-season programme with a 15-0 reversal at home to National I side Blaydon.

The contest was played out in shocking conditions with parts of the Lockwood Park field under water, which became even worse as the match went on, with another heavy downpour midway through the game.

Huddersfield made a promising start but with little actual progress against a solid Blaydon defence and gradually the tide turned, and on 30 minutes a sustained Blaydon attack took them almost to the line, from where a five-metre scrum ended with No8 Jason Smithson opening the scoring for the visitors.

Both sides made numerous substitutions at the break and it took Blaydon some time to extend their advantage.

When they did it was the turn of the backs to shine with wingers Tom Jeffery and David Sheldon involved in most of the play.

Jeffery had already made a couple of incisive breaks before making the initial surge to set up the second try, Andy Davies breaking from the scrum to send in Sheldon.

And two minutes later it was all over, Jeffery again the instigator followed by some inter-passing to take it from one 22 to the other and Sheldon once more over in the corner.

It proved a good workout for Huddersfield against a team from the higher division, and coach Dan Hyde will not be too disheartened ahead of next week’s National II kick-off against Caldy at Lockwood Park (3.00).
