Top Huddersfield centre Ben Mitchell has announced his retirement with immediate effect.

The 26-year-old has been plagued with shoulder problems throughout his rugby union career, and another dislocation during the home triumph over Luctonians a fortnight ago has proved the final straw.

“We really feel for Ben,” said player-coach Gareth Lewis.

“His form this year has been outstanding. He’s always been a talent from the time he was with me at Halifax and this season he’s been starting to show just how good he is.

“But there’s always been that shoulder problem, and another dislocation the other week has unfortunately forced the issue for him.

“He knew if it went again he’d require major surgery, and that’s not something he wants, particularly as it could effect his work as well.

“Ben’s obviously given this decision a great deal of thought, because it was well over a week between this latest injury and telling me what he’s decided to do.

“But while we’re disappointed to lose the services of such a talented player, we fully understand the reasons for his decision. It couldn’t have been easy for him.”
