High-Flying Huddersfield YMCA are taking advantage of a free weekend by giving some of their senior players extra game time with the Seconds tomorrow.

The likes of Lloyd Bentley, Stuart Morton, Louie Rafter, Stu Dyke and Niall Murphy have been named in the YM’s second string to host Wath-upon-Dearne at Laund Hill (2.15).

Club chiefs may feel the break has come at just the wrong time, with the senior side having just moved up to second in the North East I League table after the 8-7 win over Wheatley Hills.

But director of rugby Damon Scholes knows the timing could be spot-on for those established players who have been handed an extra run this weekend.

“We’ve now got genuine depth in the first-team squad, which means we can’t play everyone all of the time,” said Scholes.

“That’s why we’ve picked some of the first-team boys for this match tomorrow.

“They are the ones who we know will benefit from an extra run at the moment.

“They’ve probably not been given the opportunities they’d have liked to play regularly in North East I, but this is a chance for them to show the coaching staff they deserve to be playing at that level on a regular basis.

“There are spots available for the first-team squad that’ll be travelling to West Hartlepool next weekend. It’s up to those lads who play tomorrow to prove to us that they should be making the trip.”

And Scholes is hoping the weekend off doesn’t work against YMCA’s upbeat senior side.

“We’re on a real roll at the moment, and I know how keen the boys were to carry on playing,” he added.

“But hopefully the rest will help freshen everyone up and help them keep on firing and doing so well.”
