Old Rishworthians lost their first Yorkshire II home game of the campagin 34-30 at Copley.

They made life hard for themselves and could have thrown away the contest in the first 10 minutes, but then might have won it after a fightback.

With the last play, lock Frank Watene made a 50 yard burst, the ball was recycled but a long pass to the wing was fumbled.

It appeared to go backwards and full-back Matthew Hunt-Brown picked up to cross in the corner, but the referee ruled the ball had been knocked forward and blew for time.

However, the home side gave away too many penalties in the early stages and soon found themselves on their own line.

They could not get the ball away and a West Leeds flanker touched down and more penalties forced Rishworthians back and from a lineout the ball went along the line for a converted try.

After 10 minutes they were 12 points adrift, but left wing Joe Billing clawed back three points.

West Leeds kicked a penalty of their own and Billing added two more before stand-off Josh Kelly dropped a goal.

The visitors kicked two more penalties before Billing added another with the last kick of the first half and another early in the second half.

Rishworthians conceded again when a clever kick was gathered by the visitors’ right wing, but player-coach Damian Ball’s quick switched pass put flanker Gerard Rollings in for a try and No8

James Clarke also powered over – Billing converted to give Rishworthians a 30–26 lead.

West Leeds hit back, the left wing squeezing over in the corner and they added a penalty to make it 34–30.

In the final minutes they kept Rishworthians pinned down until Watene finally broke through in the last play.
