Old Rishworthians notched a 20-18 home win over Roundhegians – but only just.

Rishworthians have lost a couple of Yorkshire II games this season in the last minute and it looked set to be a repeat performance as the visitors lined up a long range penalty.

The attempt missed but there was time for the drop-out and right wing Joe Billing kicked it perfectly into touch for the final whistle and relief for the home side.

Leading 14–0 at half-time, Rishworthians looked to have the game in the bag.

The Copley side dominated the first half, scoring two tries and might have had three more.

The second half was a different story as the visitors’ pack took charge and only desperate defence allowed them to hang on.

Rishworthians went ahead within five minutes of the start. The pack took charge, before Nick Faulkner got in for a try, which Billing converted.

Left wing Anthony Shoesmith pulled off a try-saving tackle in the corner, before Rishworthians drove upfield, and James Clarke was unstoppable from five yards – Billing added the conversion.

Rishworthians could not get their game together in the second half.

The visitors landed a penalty within two minutes of the restart and another soon afterwards, before taking total charge.

It took 25 minutes before Rishworthians got going and Billing kicked a penalty.

Roundhegians then pounded the home line and forward pressure brought an inevitable converted try.

Billing kicked another penalty, but in the last 10 minutes the home line was under siege and a second try came with a catch and drive from a lineout.

The conversion missed, but almost from the restart Rishworthians infringed again and held their breath while the last minute penalty sailed wide.
