MARK SOWERBY is backing Nick Sharpe to make a big success of succeeding him as Huddersfield Rugby Union Club’s No8.

Director of rugby Sowerby has held the key pack position since joining the club when Wakefield went defunct in 2004.

But having helped them to two promotions, the most recent to National III North, he’s decided to concentrate on coaching.

That means Sharpe looks set to get the nod when Huddersfield play their historic first match at level four of the English club game at Lytham side Fylde next Saturday.

Sharpe came through the Huddersfield’s academy system but played for Rugby Lions while away at university, experience Sowerby believes will come in useful.

“Nick has played at a decent level, but still has youth on his side,” said Sowerby.

“He has played at lock and flanker in the past, and now has both the sized an mobility required to be a good No8.

“I think he’s more than capable of making a success of the position this season.”

Sowerby’s side were in warm-up action at Chester today having beaten Beverley 17-14 last week.
