Huddersfield Rugby Union Club are closing in on their main pre-season target of securing a top-half-of-the-table finish in their first season back in National II North.

A run of three straight wins at the start of 2015 have moved the Lockwood Park club up to eighth in the 16-club competition ahead of today’s home clash with fifth-placed Caldy.

Player-coach Gareth Lewis admitted after his side’s 29-13 defeat at Harrogate five days before Christmas that his club faced the prospect of becoming involved in a relegation scrap.

But with his men responding with wins over Luctonians, Stourbridge and Leicester Lions, Lewis is now looking up rather than down.

“It’s amazing how quickly things can change,” said the back-row forward.

“One of the first things I said after our defeat at Harrogate is that we needed a reality check. We needed to wake-up to the fact that we faced the potential threat of being involved in a relegation dogfight.

“The response couldn’t have been more positive.

“Three games later and we’re now back on track to finish in the top half of the table, which was our primary goal on our return to the division this season.

“Obviously, we know we can’t afford to take our eye off the ball just yet. We still need to keep on picking up the wins to make sure we don’t slide down the table once again.

“But it’s fair to say it’s now a lot more pleasant looking at the table than it was a month ago.

“And it’ll look even better with a win over Caldy this afternoon.”
