TOM WRIGLEY and Elliott Spiers both grabbed a brace of tries as Huddersfield’s Under 16 side enjoyed a 43-12 triumph over Preston Grasshoppers.
Preston’s forwards drove in from the start, but were met with decisive tackling from the Huddersfield front row of Nathan Smith, Tom Knapton and Will Burgess.
Huddersfield took the lead when full-back Andrew Cuthill started a move and linked with Lewis Bradley, Louis Frear and Liam Johnson before centre Spiers fed winger Tom Wrigley who beat three defenders in a run to the line.
Joe Stevenson halted one Preston attack with a strong tackle before Elliot Whetham this time provided the feed for Spiers to dance his way around the last line of defence for a good try.
Flanker Bradley missed the first conversion, but made no mistake this time to give his side a 12-0 lead.
It was by far from a one-sided affair with Preston trying to go forward at every opportunity, only to be well shackled by Huddersfield’s forwards.
Scrum half Ian Nuttall and fly-half Oliver Clegg formed a good partnership, and the home side extended their lead with a second Wrigley try.
Huddersfield brought on both substitutes for the second half and were rewarded when Lawrence Ward forced his way over the line, Bradley converting for a 24-0 lead. That was extended with a second effort from Spiers, followed by a try from No8 Frear.
Preston did manage two consolation tries and one conversion, but it was left to Johnson to have the final say with the seventh try, Bradley added the goal.
