Tom Hodson is certainly finding his feet after switching positions and switching rugby codes.

The Huddersfield fly-half is proving something of a hotshot in his first season at Lockwood Park and he is already National III North’s leading points scorer.

This afternoon Hodson, who has played rugby league for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Featherstone Rovers and Doncaster, will pit his skills against a side he knows well as Huddersfield travel to Sandal – which was Wakefield-born Hodson’s junior club.

“I started playing rugby at Sandal at six years of age,” said Hodson.

“Watching my brother play was a massive motivation to play myself and my dad encouraged me all the way.”

Since joining Huddersfield in the close season Hodson has made the No10 shirt his own, but it is not the only position he is accustomed to playing.

“I grew up playing scrum-half, but I also moved to wing and full-back and I enjoyed the space,” he said.

“I was able to read the game well and then I found I played well at fly-half as well.”

Hodson’s versatility did not only lend him to different positions in the 15-a-side code – and he made the switch to playing rugby league for a while.

At the age of 19 Hodson was signed up by Wakefield and then moved to play for Doncaster in Championship I.

It was at Doncaster where he secured his first league title honours, which followed earning Yorkshire caps in rugby union’s national county championships.

From Doncaster he moved to the Championship outfit Featherstone Rovers, where he truly found his feet.

“I was playing well at Featherstone, scoring 12 tries in 15 appearances, but I was lured away to Huddersfield to play rugby union before the end of the season, so I missed out on winning the Championship,” said Hodson.

Hodson was taken to Huddersfield by coach Ian Shuttleworth, but with the attraction of returning to the code he played as boy there wasn’t much persuading required.

“Shutts had an interest in me joining Huddersfield and that fitted perfectly with me becoming a teaching assistant at my old school in Wakefield.”
