HUDDERSFIELD Rugby Union Club’s Under 14s warmed up for their upcoming Yorkshire Plate semi-final with a fine performance to beat Barnsley for the second time this season, winning 34-5.

They notched five first-half tries with some free-flowing rugby to put the match out of Barnsley’s reach with winger Jordan Barrett bagging a hat trick of tries, his first coming after just three minutes courtesy of Louie Cooper’s off-load.

Full-back Adam Sykes’ superb touchline conversion signalled Huddersfield’s intentions, before flanker James Taylor burst over for a second score and three minutes later Barrett grabbed his second.

Hooker Taras Santar’s lovely dummy and off-load set up Barrett’s third with Cooper finishing off the first-half rout.

Barnsley tried to respond in the second half and scored on 16 minutes, but Cooper sprinted 30 yards down the wing to complete the scoring, Sykes adding a second conversion.

Huddersfield will now go into this weekend’s semi-final with Leodiensians full of confidence.

YMCA’s Under 13s visited Old Brodleians for the first time for a while, and competed very well until two late Brods tries gave the Calderdale side a 24-10 victory which rather flattered them.

Centre George Smith gave YMCA the lead with an early first-half try, before Brods hit back midway through the half to level.

But the visitors came back just before the break when they won a line-out and No8 Luke Johnson went over for YM’s second try.

Old Brods fought back in the second half, winning all the loose ball and it was not long before they scored again under the posts, the conversion putting them ahead. And with growing confidence they added two more to finish the contest.

YM winger Jack Thornton impressed on his debut, preventing at least two tries with solid tackling.
