HUDDERSFIELD YMCA are through to the third round of the EDF Senior Vase after an excellent 17-0 victory at Sefton.

Their Liverpool opponents are unbeaten at the top of Lancashire and Cheshire League II, having won all their five previous games, but they were no match for the in-form visitors.

From the opening exchanges it appeared that if the YM forwards could hold their own against a very big physical Sefton pack, the pacy YM backs would be able to use the big pitch to good advantage.

But it took the visitors until just before half-time to break the deadlock.

The first half was drawing to a close and looking like stalemate when the YM broke the deadlock.

A good run down the left wing by Scanlon enabled the YM to stretch the Sefton defence, and quick ball from the ensuing ruck was moved across field for debutant Hopkins to be tackled just short of the line.

Again the ball was recycled quickly and moved back across field which allowed prop Dobson to crash over just wide of the posts. Williams added the conversion.

YM opened the second half strongly, keeping the ball alive and running wide at every opportunity. The pack was comfortable in the scrum and Housley, Hellawell and Walker began to dominate.

On 55 minutes, after concerted pressure on the Sefton line, a scrambled clearance kick from the Sefton full-back was field by YM’s Belton going at full pace.

He scorched down the left and fed the supporting Travis who scored in the corner.

Scanlon then went over in the corner following good work from Van Niekerk. Williams missed both conversions.
