It's a lot of responsibility to give one man – but can Juan Mata save Manchester United’s season?

It’s been another testing week for David Moyes after his side slumped at Chelsea in the Premier League then slid out of the Capital One Cup semi-finals at home to Sunderland.

The penalty shoot-out defeat cost Moyes and his men a big Wembley date with Manchester City and added fuel to the argument that United are in major decline.

Pundit after pundit claim Moyes is short in midfield.

The arrival of German ace Mesut Ozil certainly had a huge effect at Arsenal, so will Mata provide some Spanish gold?

His assists tally has been flagged up.

But United need his goals as well.

He has been out of favour at Chelsea this season, but last term contributed 12.

Ryan Giggs continues to defy the age barrier, but he isn’t getting that many goals, and neither are his fellow midfielders.

And In a season when Manchester City have already smashed the 100 barrier, it is clearer than ever that they have to come from beyond the strikers if teams are to be successful.

It’s cost United to get their man, the £37m representing a £13.5m profit for Chelsea on the fee they paid Valencia in 2011.

But if he can help United claim that coveted Champions League berth, it could be a very sound investment.
