For football fans, this is the best week of the year.

And not just for the fans, but for the players as well.

All players will be thinking this is the season where everything can go well for them and maybe they’ll put themselves in line for a big career move.

Every single one of them will be hoping this is the season they have dreamed of, where all the hard work they have put in down the years and over pre-season finally pays off.

The expectation from fans is always huge.

It’s a new start, a fresh beginning and the start of the season is something everyone involved in football looks forward to.

The great thing for everyone will be to see how the new signings perform.

Does the free-transfer guy look like a good import?

Does the £1m guy look like a good investment?

Or (if you are Manchester City) does the £50m investment look worthwhile?

At every level of the game, these sorts of questions will be on the minds of the fans and they’ll be looking for positive answers.

In the Skybet Football League, it is probably the most open season there has ever been, and that’s in every division.

Incredibly, out of 36 matches in the league this weekend, only three teams are odds-on to win.

Unfortunately, Hull City are one of them against Huddersfield Town. The others are Portsmouth and Oxford in Skybet League Two.

That just illustrates that there is very little for people to choose at this stage between any of the teams – there is very little difference between so many in each division.

In the Premier League, seven teams are even-money or shorter to win their opening games.

From a betting point of view, that has to be a note of caution.

It will be so tough to pick out the right bets in the early games.

If you get them right, you will be getting good prices and great returns, but it does look a tricky opening few weeks.

As ever, I have backed Town and – don’t hate me for this – Leeds United in the Handicap Market for the Championship this season.

One is a bet with the head, the other with the heart – and I’ll leave you to decide which is which!

I watched Leeds a few times last season and they have got some great young kids coming through.

I also think the signing of Chris Wood could be pivotal.

If Wood gets 25 goals this season, then Leeds could be pushing for a play-off spot.
