Goalkeepers seem to have been hogging the headlines of late, with Joe Hart still under scrutiny, John Ruddy signing a new contract at Norwich and Ray Clemence retiring.

Clemence comes from an era when England had a real supply of top stoppers.

After Gordon Banks came Peter Shilton and Clemence, who as well as playing for Liverpool and Spurs with huge success, went on to have a top coaching career at international level.

At one stage, it seemed to be turn about in an England shirt for Shilton and Clemence, and Roy Hodgson would surely love to have that dilemma.

Instead he has been left to ponder the form of Hart, who has had a worrying number of horror shows over the past year.

Before that, the Manchester City man looked right on top of his game, and some were tipping him for the England captaincy.

Hart helped make sure of a place at the World Cup finals, but another high-profile mistake against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge means the question marks just won’t go away.

Some suggest he has suffered from a lack of competition, both at City and on the international stage, with Ruddy (one cap) and Celtic’s Fraser Forster (none) his only serious rivals.

Forster has won some rave reviews up in Scotland, not just in domestic games but also in the Champions League.

Will Hodgson elect to give him a chance in one of the upcoming Wembley friendlies against Chile and Germany?

And if he does, will that help or hinder Hart.

I still think Hart is the man for Brazil, but Hodgson needs good-quality back-up, and his selections later this month will prove very interesting.
