Three members of the Huddersfield Golf Club’s greenkeeping team are assisting at prestigious golf events this summer.

Ben Turner, course manager for the last 11 years, was part of the greenkeeping team at Walton Heath on the May 26 for a US Open qualifying event.

He had a fantastic experience preparing the course and got the opportunity to watch previous major winners Jose Maria Olazabal and Paedrig Harrington perform. But it wasn’t a complete picnic - the morning greenkeeping briefing took place at 3.45am and work commenced at 4.30am!

Jack Bryson, 21, an assistant greenkeeper with five years’ experience and who plays cricket for Slaithwaite in the Drakes Huddersfield League, will be helping out at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool from July 17 to 20.

He will be one of 47 support greenkeepers, chosen from over 140 worldwide applicants, who will work alongside the Royal Liverpool’s existing team to prepare the course and accompany each match during play to ensure bunkers are raked in a correct and professional manner.

Assistant greenkeeper James Breeze will assist at the English Seniors Open to be held at Rockliffe Hall from August 22 to 24.

This won’t be the first time James has mixed with leading golf professionals. He has previously been involved with the British Open at Royal St George’s in 2011 and twice at the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

The three were all selected as a result of there ties with Fixby and and also as a result of their active membership of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA).
