‘The biggest cherry on the best cake.’
That’s how the new English Amateur champion has described his victory in Saunton last week.
Huddersfield player Nick Marsh, 19, has been inundated with messages of congratulations via social media, phone and email – from family, friends and fellow golfers since he took the English Amateur Championship title in north Devon and is now turning his sights to a professional career in the game.
In the last seven days he has jumped 28 places in the World Amateur Golf rankings and is now in 36th position.
To honour his achievement, Huddersfield Golf Club, which he joined two and a half years ago, has given him honorary life membership.
Marsh, who plays off plus5, said: “I am absolutely over the moon winning the English Amateur; for me it is the biggest cherry on the best cake.
“I could not have asked for anything better, it’s the biggest amateur tournament in England and to win it is absolutely fantastic.
“I was confident going in to the championship, and once there, I felt really comfortable. Around 80% to 90% of my golf this season has been on links courses and going into the tournament, my game was almost at its peak.
“The reaction to my win has been unbelievable. My parents have always been so supportive of my career and they are so happy for me.
“My golfing friends and club have also been fantastic.
“Fixby have been really supportive, and captain Paul Green has been great. I could not ask to be a member of a better club; I would not want to play anywhere else.”
Marsh is now looking at turning pro. He is going to Qualifying School at Frilford Heath at the end of September and, depending on how he fares, intends to become a professional at the end of this season or next.
He said: “We’ll see what happens and how far I get. If I think I could earn enough money for a career, I will turn pro this year, if not I’ll turn pro next year.”
Whether it’s this year or next, it will happen. Nick Marsh is the real deal, he has all the golfing attributes, a good work ethic –as anyone who has seen how many hours he puts in at Fixby will agree – and he has the self belief.
