VISIT the newly refurbished Bagshaw Museum in Batley later this month and you will be able to see a collection 19th century paintings, many of which have not been on public view for many years.

Some of the pictures, which are from the Kirklees Collection, have been specially restored for the exhibition.

A dozen pictures from the collection will be hung in a small picture gallery, which has been created in the former Billiard Room as part of the refurbishment work.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to display a selection of works from the Kirklees Collection at the newly refurbished Bagshaw Museum, including newly restored paintings and drawings that will enable visitors to appreciate the visual appearance of the house as it was originally designed,” said Robert Hall, Principal Visual Arts Officer for Kirklees Museums and Galleries.

Several of the paintings have had conservation treatment as part of a rolling programme of cleaning and conserving the collection held at Huddersfield Art Gallery. These oil paintings were conserved by specialist restorer Gillian Walker of Sheffield.

“Many of these paintings were previously in store and have not been on display for some time. Now that we have a suitable space, I think people will be thrilled to see them,” added Ruth McDonald, Museum Officer for Bagshaw Museum.

Winners of a competition to create an image of Bagshaw Museum will also see their work displayed in the museum when it reopens on Sunday, October 25.
