A weekend of live traditional Scottish and folk music will take audiences from foot-stomping lively to soulfully reflective at the Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax.

Saturday will see The Tannahill Weavers taking to the stage with songs, ballads and lullabies from their Celtic heritage. The quartet combines traditional melodies with driving rhythmic accompaniment and rich vocals. Named after the Paisley-born poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the group has an international name for its special brand of Scottish music.

Then on Sunday, two Yorkshire folk musicians, Pete Coe and Alice Jones, present their concert, The Search for Five Finger Frank, performing original arrangements of songs, ballads and dance tunes collected by 19th century Leeds folk song enthusiast Frank Kidson.

Singing and accompanying themselves on piano, melodeon, harmonium, bouzouki, banjo, whistle and clarinet, the versatile duo will be recorded by BBC Radio Leeds as part of a documentary on Kidson. Pete and Alice have also released a double CD of the music.

Five Finger Frank was Kidson’s own description of his piano playing on receiving his MA from the University of Leeds.
