Celebrated artist Darren Baker is staging a spring exhibition in his home town.

Darren, from Meltham, will be holding the event at AC Gallery on Byram Street in Huddersfield from the end of this month until mid April.

Darren is one of the UK’s most sought after artists with his work collected around the world.

From humble beginnings during his years at Bradford Art College to painting Her Majesty the Queen, Darren’s career has been quite remarkable.

The exhibition called From Huddersfield to Her Majesty will feature work from Darren’s early career right through to works painted specifically for the exhibition. Alongside these paintings will be original sketches and illustrations from a new children’s book written by Darren’s wife Abigail – all illustrated by Darren.

There will also be limited edition, rare artist proofs.

The preview evening opens at 7pm on Thursday, March 27.

AC Gallery owner Mike Baggs said: “I can recall Darren coming to see my father years ago and he must have been only around 18 at the time. Both my father and I were really impressed so Darren left a few paintings with us which we displayed in the gallery.

“I’m not sure if we were the first gallery ever to display his work but we were certainly one of the first! It’s amazing to now be putting together this incredible exhibition which we believe will be the largest ever of Darren’s work. There will be over 60 paintings. It’s more than seven years since we put on an exhibition with Darren and this promises to be something really special.

“We have paintings from his very early days, produced while Darren was at college, right through to new work which has never been seen before. I wanted the exhibition to be a celebration of how far Darren has come and the incredible journey he has had.

“Darren’s work has been hard to see outside of London for many years, such has been the demand for his work. This show has been two years in the planning and we are really proud to be hosting this event which offers art collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to see such an amazing collection all in one place. On the opening night Darren himself will be joining us, making for a memorable evening. My aim is to make the gallery the centre for Darren’s work in the north and this is the launching pad for that.”

The exhibition runs until April 12 with the gallery open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
