The internationally acclaimed sculptor Ursula von Rydingsvard is to appear at a special event at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The German-born artist, who now lives and works in America, is famed for her red cedar sculptures, many of which are of monumental proportions. A major exhibition of her work has been staged at the sculpture park since this summer and includes several pieces that are illuminated. The evening event on Thursday, November 13, at 7.30pm will offer visitors the chance to meet the sculptor and see these outdoor works glittering against the night sky.

The artist will also be heard in conversation with the park’s Founding and Executive Director Peter Murray, discussing her work, influences and current exhibition, the most extensive she has ever held.

The exhibition, which encompasses more than 40 works of drawing and sculpture made over the last two decades, can be seen until January 4, 2015.

Von Rydingsvard’s work is well-known in the USA but is less familiar to European art lovers. She has been compared to the sculptural heroes Moore and Miro and her pieces are in the permanent collections of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art.

While many of her sculptures are hewn from red cedar – a material that she is now allergic to after years of working it – she also produces bronze, urethane resin and graphite pieces.

A gigantic bronze bowl that stands at the entrance to the sculpture park – and is illuminated from within – was created by Rydingsvard especially for the exhibition. During the day it looms out of the landscape like a jagged cliff but at night takes on a magical, filigree quality.

Tickets for an evening with Ursula von Rydingsvard are £8 and can be booked online at www.ysp.co.uk/events

Her exhibition can be seen daily from 10am until 5pm.
