It was a smash hit at the cinemas and made global stars out of a huge, green Scottish ogre and a talking donkey.

Family favourite Shrek is now a musical - and it's coming to Leeds Grand Theatre.

Shrek the Musical is kicking off its first UK tour at the Leeds theatre tomorrow and will run until August 17 - the perfect summer holiday treat.

The West End hit is coming to Yorkshire direct from London's infamous Drury Lane Theatre and promises endless fun for all the family.

The UK Tour will be directed by former Eastenders actor Nigel Harman, who won a Laurence Olivier Award for his performance as Lord Farquaad in the West End production.

He said: "I am delighted to be returning to Shrek as its director. This show is very special to me with its dizzying blend of great characters, a hilarious script and sublime music.

"This production is visually stunning, and the story has the magic ingredient of moving at great pace while still being surprisingly intimate.

"In short, there was no way I was going to say no to the challenge of realising the production for the UK and Ireland.  I really can't wait to take this show on the road!"

The musical is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s Shrek! and the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animations film.

Shrek the Musical will run at the Grand from Wednesday July 23 to Sunday August 17.

Tickets are on sale now and cost £19 to £43.
