HOLMFIRTH-based mixed media artist Sally Wilson has got orders for her work that are likely to keep her busy until Christmas.

She had a busy weekend at the British Craft Trade Fair at Harrogate where her one-off handcrafted textural sculptures and relief work went down a storm.

Sally, whose work reflects her upbringing on a Yorkshire smallholding, gained a first class honours degree in sculpture at Loughborough College of Art and Design before acquiring textile skills through the City and Guilds embroidery course.

Those skills are put to goods use creating everything from a mad hare, to a quirky, stripe-legged bird to an appealing cormorant in velvet.

Sally uses an extensive range of working methods including machine embroidery, hand stitching, printed imager maker techniques, applique, felt-making and burning techniques as well as forged and welded metal work.

Sally creates everything from textiles and sculptures to cards, key rings and even scented sachets.

“Making a beautiful and vibrant piece of art from what most would consider just old stuff is tremendously satisfying from a myriad of different standpoints.

“The show was fantastic. I sold a lot of my work and have orders up to Christmas.”

Sally’s work is on show in a number of venues including Mezze in Holmfirth and GCHQ at Brockholes.

Last year, she won the machine embroidery category of the Madeira/Stitch Magazine Competition and her work is currently on tour.
