THE GLASS RAINBOW by James Lee Burke, Phoenix £7 99.

DAVE Robicheaux, the veteran Louisiana detective, is drawn into a murder investigation almost against his wishes. A time serving convict asks him to re-examine the death of his sister, Bernadette Latiolais. She is one of seven girls and young women who have been murdered. Could there be a connection. A serial killer? Trouble is, the other girls were prostitutes and no one seems to care.

Dave is joined, as usual, by his incorrigible sidekick, private eye Clete Purcell, and their investigation takes them up against old Louisiana money and power, family honour and a deadly and murderous conspiracy that puts Dave’s wife and daughter in the line of danger as well as bringing him face to face with his own mortality.

This is the 18th outing for Robicheaux from a genuine master of the thriller genre.
