A YORKSHIRE author is hoping tales from his youth will inspire a generation of youngsters to read.

New boy hero Bradley Baker has been created by children’s author David Lawrence Jones with some good old fashioned courage, a touch of magic and bucket loads of mystery.

And the author will talk to children at Waterstones in the Kingsgate centre on Sunday, February 19.

The books follow the exploits of Bradley Baker and his adventures in the parallel world of Pathylon.

David, who grew up in Rotherham, said: “The idea for Bradley’s character and the plots were extracted from original stories I created back in the 70’s.”

After recalling the tales he told to his brother during his childhood in the mining village of Ravenfield near Rotherham, David started to pen Bradley’s adventures and completed the first tome in 2009.

And they’ve gone on to become best sellers in the children’s literacy world – but there are more adventure to come.

Bradley Baker’s exploits continue in The Curse of Pathylon – which tells the story of 11-year-old Bradley and his adventures when he discovers a sacred gold coin.

He is magically transported down the plughole into the world of Pathylon where he encounters many challenging tasks and unusual creatures.

The second book in the series is called The Amulet of Silvermoor and takes Bradley back down the plughole on another amazing adventure through a disused coalmine based on a real-life Yorkshire colliery Silverwood, which eventually leads him back to Pathylon to face even greater challenges.

David is currently working on the third adventure in the series Bradley Baker and the Pyramids of Blood, which is due for publication in 2012.

And ahead of the next instalment David will be meeting and greeting his young fans at a Waterstones Regional Book Signing Tour.

He has been at the Kingsgate book shop before and thrilled an audience of children and parents with an interactive talk.

David added: “We’re really excited about the release of both titles.

“They take the main protagonist from a timid shy boy through many stages of bravery and adversity, as the daunting tasks presented to him unfold.

“I have plans to write more adventures for Bradley, which see him mature into a truly memorable character.”
