KING OF ITHACA by Glyn Iliffe, Pan, £6.99.

EPERITUS is a young Greek soldier on a solitary pilgrimage to the oracle on Mount Parnassus, when he stumbles across a group of travellers outnumbered by renegade deserters from the war in Thebes.

He joins them, later discovering he is in the ranks of Odysseus, Prince of Ithaca.

Eperitus agrees to help Odysseus save his homeland and they journey to Sparta, where leaders and princes are competing for the hand of the beautiful Helen, while Agamemnon plots to unite all the Greek city states under his own leadership.

This is the first in a planned series of novels about the legendary adventures of Odysseus.
