BRIGHOUSE and Rastrick Band’s dynamic professional conductor, Australian Professor David King makes his first concert appearance in the town next month.
Prof King has been with the band since 2009 but his time in Brighouse has so far been devoted to rehearsal work though he did conduct the band at Halifax Minster last year.
Little wonder then that his first concert appearance with the band, who are the current National Champions, has been eagerly awaited.
See him not only conduct the band but hear this world class musician in action as a cornet soloist at Central Methodist Church in Brighouse on February 26.
David King is one of the giants of brass band music. He left Australia to attend Salford College of Music in 1982.
In Australia he has won awards for his solo playing and that continued in this country where he won the British Open Solo Championship, on cornet, every year from 1988 to 1992.
His enormous talent and winning mentality then transferred to the conductor’s stand when he took up the baton with Yorkshire Building Society Band for a 10 year golden period. He is now an Advisor Consultant and Artiste for ‘Yamaha Music’.
At the Brighouse concert, Prof King will be assisted by recently appointed resident musical director, Sandy Smith. Sandy came south from Scotland as a student to complete his music education in Huddersfield and stayed in the area to become one of the country’s leading tenor horn players.
He is also a talented brass composer and arranger.
