IT HAS become something of a tradition at St George’s Church in Brockholes but this year’s singing of Handel’s Messiah will have a special significance.

The concert on Sunday (March 24) is part of celebrations to mark the church’s 150th anniversary.

Organiser Noel Clarke has put together a strong line-up of soloists including prize-winning soprano Sarah Ogden, a former Kirklees Young Musician of the Year who is from Brockholes.

Sarah has just starred in a major opera at the Lawrence Batley Theatre with great success.

The contralto is Barbara Brook, who sings with Huddersfield Choral Society and is a respected soloist.

It’s a busy weekend for Thom Meredith, principal of Kirklees Music School and director of Colne Valley Male Voice Choir.

Thom sings the bass role on Sunday but also has a big concert in Holmfirth on Saturday night.

Alongside him on both nights is the young tenor Andrew McAllister who also sings in performances in Holmfirth and Brockholes.

Mr Clarke will conduct the choir which is expected to attract around 75 singers from across the district.

The orchestra will be led by Donald Clarke and the solo trumpeters will be Julian Wightman and Rebecca Robertson.

Singers will get together at 2.30pm on Sunday for a rehearsal conducted by Mr Clarke with a performance at 7pm.

This celebratory Messiah will have a “come and sing” element so any singers wanting to join are welcome to turn up at the rehearsal.

There will be tea for all the performers in Brockholes Methodist Church at 5pm.
