THERE’S a quiet buzz of excitement around the first subscribers’ concert of the new Huddersfield Choral Society season.

Tonight’s concert at Huddersfield Town Hall features the choir in an all-Italian programme.

And there’s the bonus of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the young Russian, Vasily Petrenko (pictured).

Petrenko was born in St Petersburg and is just 31. He is the youngest person ever to be appointed principal conductor in the orchestra’s 165-year history and the first Russian.

This remarkable conductor was still in his teens when he became resident conductor at St Petersburg Opera and Ballet Theatre. He has since gone on to work with some of the world’s finest orchestras, earning international acclaim and top prizes for his inspirational performances.

Tonight’s programme opens with Puccini’s Messa di Gloria and the choir will also sing Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

The Choral has brought in a quartet of top soloists, Katherine Broderick (soprano), Claire Bradshaw (mezzo), Michael Bracegirdle (tenor) and Christopher Purves (bass).

For those keen to get tickets for the Choral’s public performance of Handel’s Messiah, which this year is on December 18 in the town Hall, look out for the application form in tomorrow night’s Examiner.
