HUDDERSFIELD Choral Society members are celebrating a music festival win.

But the win at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival was not for their singing - but for their musical knowledge.

The Choral Society’s quiz team won a narrow victory in the finals of the Mrs Sunderland Music Quiz, beating a team from the Huddersfield and District U3A Enjoying Music group by just one point.

Quizmaster Ken Rothery had set a testing series of questions on opera, oratorio, symphonic music and general musical knowledge. In the end a final bonus round gave the lead to the Choral Society team in a nail-biting finish.

Team captain Margaret Collison praised her team members Susan Kirby, David Burgess and Jim Cowell, and thanked the U3A team for a well fought fight.

The U3A team were William Kirby, Jim Bostick, Ken Rafferty and Jean Gooden.

Tensions were high in the Kirby household, with husband and wife on opposing teams. But at least they were sure of enjoying the trophy; an abstract ceramic plaque entitled To Apollo, which is being shared around the team members for the next 12 months, before the prize fight resumes in 2009.
