WAYNE MCGregor is a big hitter in the dance world. He works with top companies and is known for his innovation, for his collaborations across dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science.

The work he creates is ground-breaking and physically challenging for his dancers.

But such are his skills that he is in huge demand. Wayne is artistic director of Wayne McGregor/Random Dance, resident company at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London and resident choreographer of the Royal Ballet, the first to come from contemporary dance.

Seven years ago, Wayne was a Research Fellow at the Experimental Psychology department of Cambridge University.

Earlier this year, he was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) and has just finished a two year stint as the government’s first Youth Dance Champion.

No surprise then to discover that the man has a phenomenal workload.

In the past year alone, he has delivered world premieres for New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet and The Royal Opera.

And just to prove that there are no limits to his creative abilities, he has also worked as movement director on films such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

So there are a string of pretty convincing reasons why its worth heading to the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Tuesday March 22 to see what Wayne and his company have been working on.

It is the only place in Yorkshire where you will be able to see this award-winning British choreographer’s latest work which is called, Far.

With a cast of 10 dancers, Far looks back at the 18th century, an age when rationality and science over took traditional values.

Far combines film and live action and is set to a new, haunting score by electronic superstar Ben Frost, an Australian who now lives in Iceland.

He too is seen as an innovator. Ben has been described as “one of the most interesting and groundbreaking producers in the world today”.

His music’s intense physicality has filled gallery spaces and driven contemporary dance productions by Chunky Move, the Icelandic Dance Company, and by acclaimed choreographers such as Erna Ómarsdottir and of course, Wayne McGregor.

Wayne has been pretty busy too and has two other world premieres coming up this summer.

He has created a new work for the Royal Ballet which is due to premiere in May and a further piece for the Paris Opera Ballet gets its first performance in June.

In November, fans can expect an opera/dance collaboration for Wayne McGregor / Random Dance at Sadler’s Wells.

Not content will all of those projects, Wayne is also choreographing the new video to Radiohead’s Lotus Flower, from their latest album The King of Limbs.

Wayne is a prolific dance maker and Wayne McGregor/Random Dance was founded in 1992.

Collaboration lies at the heart of his dance practice, and through this, Wayne continues to innovate new work with world-class artists.

Far is showing on Tuesday, March 22, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £14, £12, £10 / concessions £2 off.
