LISTEN out for celebrations, diamond jubilee style, in Hade Edge next weekend.

A concert at Hade Edge Band room on Saturday June 2 brings together not just the resident band but an international band from Denmark. Both have championship section status.

Hade Edge Band will host musicians from the Concord brass band and this is the only chance to see the Danish musicians in concert in the Huddersfield area.

The Danish visitors are in the region to take part in the Whit Friday march contests on June 1 in Saddleworth, a day before its Hade Edge date.

Concord Brass Band was founded in 1957 by the late Herbert Moller, the first brass band in Denmark, and probably the first non salvation band in Europe outside Great Britain.

It is a brass band according to British standard with 30 brass players and percussionists.

The band plays all kinds of music from popular items and classical transcriptions to original repertoire for brass band of the highest standard.

Concord Band continues to be one of the best bands in Denmark. It has won several Danish Championships and also competed at the European Championships.

In recent years, some of its key players have been in demand from both British and Norwegian bands to sit in at contests.

Its principal Stanley Westh played a significant part in Hepworth Band’s second place at last year’s Yorkshire Regionals.

In addition solo euphonium Steffen Maersk has performed on several occasions with REG Vardy and Wakefield Metropolitan.

The band is trained and conducted by Stig Maersk, a former cornet player with the band, now studying trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. At contests the band is directed by MD Russell Gray.

Next weekend’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration starts at 7pm and will also feature Hade Edge Swing Band.

Hade Edge musical director Simon Wood is at the helm. Admission is £5 on the door or by booking tickets with Simon on 07973 426939.
