Get ready to see St George's Square in a new light as the man behind the Tour de France's lit-up Emley Mast prepares to work his magic.

At the Festival of Light on Saturday, lighting designer James Bawn will dazzle the crowds with a display designed to shine light both on — and out of — buildings around the square.

James and his team were hard at work from 8am yesterday preparing the buildings for their Festival debut, and setting up wireless controls.

The train station, the George Hotel, the Britannia building and the Lion building will all be part of Saturday's display, and James has been able to secure access inside the buildings to allow him to shine light out of the striking architecture as well as onto it.

James said: "We're not only lighting the buildings up but we'll be putting texture onto them as well."

The display, which will illuminate the square once darkness has fallen, has proven to be a much more technical task than the Emley Moor project and required two months of planning.

Because James is unable to run cables between the buildings, the lights have to be controlled with wireless technology.

"The technology behind the Emley Mast project was quite simple in comparison to this," James added. "The technical difficulties far outweigh Emley.

"There's guys in buildings all around me at the moment, hanging out of windows, but it's coming together nicely."

James, 33, will also be lighting the stage, due to be built in St George's Square today (Friday).

"The architecture in St George's Square is great," he said. "I have been in Huddersfield all my life, I've done jobs here quite a few times but this has been really good because it is a blank canvas to work with."
