SINGING is good for you. There are few who doubt the theory that there is nothing like singing for generating that feelgood factor.

Honley Male Voice Choir enjoys its music and the friendships that many of its members have made through singing.

Now, like many other choirs, the Honley men are trying to encourage more people to share the benefits they have already found through singing.

Next week, the choir is holding a special invitation evening at its weekly rehearsal in Honley.

If you’d like to see whether singing is for you, now’s the chance to find out.

“They don’t have to have any previous experience or be able to read music,” said the choir’s public relations officer Stan Solomons.

“All we ask is that they have a love of music.”

The choir had hoped to celebrate its 75th anniversary last year by increasing its membership to 75.

Its big year did attract some new members but the choir says it is still about 15 short of that target.

Tuesday’s open rehearsal at the singers’ headquarters in Honley nursery and infant school in School Street, Honley (7.30pm) offers a chance to sing with the men or just to listen.

“For most of the time since the choir was formed in 1936 it has had two rehearsals a week on Tuesday and Friday evenings,” said Stan.

But because people have so many commitments these days, the choir has reduced that to every Tuesday which they hope potential new members will find more able to commit to.

Singing is great fun and the choir has a real sense of community. Many of the men’s wives or partners are involved with the Ladies’ Circle which supports the choir and runs events for its members and to fundraise.

The rehearsal starts at 7.30pm. Join them and get a real Yorkshire welcome.
