Talkthru

Talkthru (formerly known as Huddersfield Pregnancy Crisis Centre) has been operating in Huddersfield since 1999, offering a range of free and confidential counselling and support services. Our advisors are trained and CRB checked, and our service is unbiased and non-judgemental. Talkthru has 'Kirklees Young People Friendly' accreditation (www.kypf.org.uk). We offer free pregnancy testing and chlamydia screening (under 25's). We provide a safe environment for women and men facing unplanned pregnancy to talk about their situation, discuss all the options and take time and space to work through their feelings. We provide counselling support for women who have had a termination. Talkthru also provides support to those who have experienced miscarriage and baby loss, giving women and their partners a safe environment and the time needed to work through their emotions. We hold a drop in on Monday, Tuesday and Friday 12-2pm, but appointments are available outside these hours. We provide practical support by supplying good quality used baby equipment and clothes (from birth to 24 months) to needy local families. Baby equipment drop in is held on Thursdays, 12-2pm. We would like to buy a laser printer in order to run the centre more efficiently.

The Brain Damaged Children's Charity

Our charity is for brain damaged children in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The charity was formed due to Travis, our grandchild who was born brain damaged. Due to his 24 hour care, we need to help in the constant care of these children. Any money would be included in the charity fund for use in: local taxi fares, petrol money, hospital visits, parking fees and eventually any operations for brain damaged children when funds are available.

The Dominic Rodgers Trust

Following the tragic death of Huddersfield woman Stacey Rodgers' son Dominic due to carbon monoxide poisoning, the Dominic Rodgers Trust was set up. We aim to protect lives by the promotion of high standards of gas safety, using a variety of methods to raise public awareness, particularly in relation to the prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Trust has produced, with the help of students from Netherhall Learning Campus, a DVD raising awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning. The DVD, which features monologues and dramatic shorts written, acted and filmed by local students, will be a great tool in promoting safety and protecting lives. Money raised via Wish 2012 will be spent on sending copies of this DVD out to every school in the region, as well as selected community groups, along with an educator's pack to aid in the delivery of a session on the dangers of carbon monoxide.

The Elderberry Club

The Elderberry Club is a community group for the elderly in Birkby, Bradley, Cowcliffe and Fartown, many of whom find getting out and about socially quite difficult. Particularly those who need help with transport. We try to have a meeting/event every 5 weeks or so. Volunteers support us with transport and without them we would not be able to exist. We try to have a varied programme to interest all our members. This years Holiday at Home was in June when we had Table Top Olympics (6 winners ages totalled 533), a jubilee party, flower arranging, a canal trip and a members afternoon where we brought memorabilia to share with each other. Lunch or afternoon tea is always provided at a minimal cost, eating together is very important as many of our members live on their own. You should hear the chatter. Our last meeting was a belated Yorkshire Day "Ee Bah Gum" and the next one "Home Sweet Home" with speaker and PowerPoint presentation. In November we have a Christmas shopping trip to Armitages at Birchencliffe with tea in the cafe. December is our carol concert and afternoon tea at Bradley Court (MHA Housing) where some of our members live.

The Howland Centre

The Howland Centre is a registered charity providing arts and crafts activities to adults with physical disabilities in North Kirklees. Our members pay a fee of s2 for each afternoon session they wish to attend. This gives carers the opportunity for respite. We have few paid staff who are supported by volunteers. Our aims are to realise members potential, maintain interests, participate in activities and build confidence. We have run successful projects with schools and other community groups, funded by grants, which bridge the gap between able bodied and disabled people and the young and old. We also hold a coffee morning each Wednesday, run by volunteers, in order to raise much needed funds for the centre. Wed like to fund further projects for our members including a field trip where transport would be required and to make improvements to the centre.

The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust

The trust is now 16 years old and has developed into so much more than a charity set up as a tribute to a young 17 year old girl who sadly lost her fight against cancer. Although the Trust is not a large charity it is a hard working national charity with its roots firmly based in Huddersfield. There is so much about the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust that the people of Huddersfield should be very proud, as without their kind and generous support during the 16 years, the charity would not be what it is today - making a vital difference to the lives of so many young people fighting cancer. The aims of Lauras trust remain to fund medical research into cancers affecting the age group 13-24 as well as providing support mechanisms for the hospitals admitting young cancer patients in this age group. Within the Yorkshire region there are only 3 hospital locations, Leeds, Sheffield and now a new unit has just opened in Hull. Therefore these young cancer patients have to travel far to gain treatments for their cancer, far from their home, family and friends.

The Nerve Centre

The Nerve Centre is based in Huddersfield and covers the West Yorkshire region. Our aim is to provide an environment which improves the quality of life of those with long term neurological conditions and their families/carers, by addressing issues around physical and emotional wellbeing, employment, education and training. We run user led activities and therapy workshops, such as art, drama, tai chi, yoga, healthy cooking, aromatherapy massage, reiki and reflexology - all proven to reduce stress levels and social isolation. We provide information through our library, internet access and invite specialist speakers to ensure our members have up-to-date information. The Nerve Centre also offers a structured training programme for volunteers, many of whom are also members. Volunteers and members benefit from both personal and professional development in a learning environment and culture which recognises the skills of those living with a disability. We are extremely proud of our achievements and the care we give to our members. The organisation has over 526 individual members and a range of community and voluntary organisations giving us a total 5716 associated members. At the end of 2012 we are relocating to larger premises, and this will mark the development of our home support service.

The Oliver Field Appeal

We fundraise for Oliver Field who is nearly two and has had an aggressive type of cancer. The fundraising is to give him the option of treatment abroad should his cancer return. We are really positive about Oliver's future but if this does come back, his treatment options in the UK are limited and any money we raise could get him access to immediate treatment as these things are very time critical at the point of relapse.

The Pennine Singers Ladies Choir

We are a friendly ladies choir of mixed ages. We meet every Thursday evening at Waverley House to rehearse. Our repertoire is very varied from folk songs and classics to modern and popular songs. We also include songs from shows in our concerts. We frequently raise funds for a variety of charities and perform at many different venues. We have sung at many concerts and this year have sung at a wedding. We have also had a joint afternoon concert with a local junior school choir which was very successful. We have recently had a change of Conductor which in itself brings many new challenges. We have 30 members and we always welcome new members to come and join us. Singing is a wonderful and very enjoyable way of bringing people of together and a way of making new friends. The money would go towards paying the rent on our practice venue and buying new music so we can have a larger variety of songs to perform.

Thurstonland Village Association

Thurstonland Village Association was founded five years ago. During this time we have worked to bring the community together for the benefit of all the occupants of Thurstonland. We have made improvements to the recreation field, provided picnic tables, started a community choir and with the aid of volunteers, enhanced the appearance of the village. We hold village walks, which enable people to enjoy the surrounding area, and produce footpath maps which are popular with many walkers. Money from Wish would enable us to produce newsletters and further development of the website. We hope to keep everyone in our community well informed and encourage others to enjoy this beautiful area. If anyone would like to explore our website further the address is www.thurstonland.org. United Churches Healing Ministry

We are a local Christian counselling, training and resource centre and we are celebrating 20 years of helping people through difficult periods of their lives. We offer a professional counselling service to anyone in need of someone to talk to, on a confidential one to one basis, and we ask for a set donation each week based on what each person can give. We are also the only British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Accredited Service in the area. We also have our own counsellor training programme which teaches people from an introduction level through to gaining a Diploma in Counselling, with accreditation from Open College Network. In addition we hire counselling, training, group rooms and sports hall to local individuals and community groups. We have a charity shop in the centre of Milnsbridge. As the cost of running the centre increases year on year, we continually struggle to find the money to keep the centre running, so any contribution we receive from the Wish campaign would be greatly welcomed.

Yetton Together

Yetton Together is a group of residents from Kirkheaton and the surrounding areas (including Upper Heaton, Bog Green, Houses Hill, Gawthorpe, Lascelles Hall and Briggate) who got together following an open meeting in July 2010. The aim is: to promote community cohesion, identify and prioritise community issues, develop, publicise and facilitate the implementation of action plans and to address those issues. We are not part of any political party (although the local councillors are very supportive). We are not part of any church group (though the churches are involved) and are not part of Kirklees Council (but have had good support from them). A questionnaire was used to identify the views, needs and suggestions of the community and to develop a formal community-led plan for the area. Five categories were identified as having significant potential for development: Transport & Traffic, Amenities & Activities, Community Safety, Environment, and Children & Young People. The group is currently considering various schemes (e.g. a community cafe, good neighbour scheme and floral displays) all of which would enhance the experience of living and working in the area.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is an independent charity providing a life saving rapid response emergency service to 5 million people across Yorkshire. Our two helicopters fly seven days a week, 365 days a year, covering a vast landscape that not only includes major cities and motorways, but also rural and isolated locations. Our air ambulances operate from Leeds Bradford International Airport and RAF Topcliffe near Thirsk, and together they cover the whole of the region. The fast medical response that the air ambulance service provides is vital to a patient who has received major trauma. On average, when a patient has been received by the YAA, they will always be only 10 minutes from the nearest hospital and 15 minutes from the most relevant treatment centre. In some cases, this can save people's lives.

To keep providing this life saving service the charity needs to raise s7200 per day to keep both of Yorkshires Air Ambulances maintained and in the air. The generosity that we receive is the life blood of the charity and without this help we would not be able to provide the service that we are so proud of.

Yorkshire Traction Honley Band

Yorkshire Traction Honley Band aims to provide quality entertainment with a varied repertoire throughout Kirklees and beyond. Members range from eight to eighty years old of both genders, and we have a Junior/Learner's Band which currently has seven members aged eight to seventeen. Learning to work as a team where each individual is a valued part of the whole team is important, as is encouraging each other to progress in order to help make a positive contribution to the local community, which provides a sense of achievement and enhances self-esteem. We do not discriminate against players with minimal ability because within the structure of the Brass Band is room for top, mediocre and novice players. The majority of players live within the local community, all of whom travel to twice-weekly practises and Band Functions in their own self-funded transport. The Band provides free tuition, instruments and uniform. We welcome new players of all ages, ethnicity and background.
