IT IS a big summer favourite but last year, heavy downpours put paid to Concert On The Hill 2012.

The outdoor music spectacular, enjoyed by thousands every year, was one of the major casualties of last year’s bad weather.

But this popular concert at Laund Hill, home of Huddersfield YMCA Rugby Union Football Club, has bounced back and master of ceremonies David Roebuck, is determined that it is business as usual on July 6.

“We lost the concert last year because of the awful weather,” said David.

“Its the first time that we’ve had to cancel but so much was rained off last year including Honley Show.

“We’re hoping for the best this year. We have another fantastic line-up and it should be a great night.

“Last year’s was concert number 13. Cancelling cost us about £2,000 which is a lot of money for a small rugby club.

“But we are calling this year’s number 14, not 13!”

So what’s in store for concertgoers this time round? Much the same winning formula which has packed audiences into Laund Hill for more than a decade, according to David.

Good music, a great family atmosphere and, hopefully, a fine summer’s evening.

Those are the key ingredients of what for many has become an unmissable annual event.

Pack a picnic, take the family and sit back and relax as you listen to a brass band, three choirs, plus one of our top local singers.

The date is July 6, the line-up features Colne Valley Male Voice Choir, Honley Male Voice Choir, Lindley Band and the award-winning Lindley Junior School Choir. Soprano Julie Garbutt makes a welcome return.

Lindley Band, conducted by its musical director Chris Lewis, will open with Strike Up The Band and will also play the theme tune from the James Bond movie, Skyfall plus the classical piece by Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez .

Its programme will also include a medley of Tom Jones’ music and the Dambusters’ March to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the RAF raid.

The two male voice choirs are expected to sing a number of items together including the Battle Hymn of The Republic and When The Saints Go Marching In.

Honley’s individual items will include Till I Hear You Sing, I Dreamed A Dream, The Water Of Tyne and One Moment In Time.

Colne Valley will sing Let All Men Sing and No Arms Can Ever Hold You.

Julia’s choice of songs is likely to include A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square plus music from the shows, Chess and My Fair Lady.

The children from Lindley’s award winning young choir will sing in the concert’s first half. They are expected to sing items including Streets Of London, Wings and It Don’t Mean A Thing.

Word has it that the big finale could include some Abba songs as well as the Last Night of the Proms’ style classics which should fit the firework finish perfectly.
