Huddersfield is surrounded by lush farmland and has more than its fair share of farm shops with cafes selling and serving locally-reared and sourced products.
All promise field to plate freshness in comfortable, often scenic, surroundings and have become popular places for lunch dates in the countryside.
It has to be said that all have meat-heavy menus (no surprises there), but vegetarians who eat cheese will find plenty to please them.
One of the farm shops in our selection also offers gluten-free options.
Treat yourself to a tasty, locally sourced lunch — here are five Huddersfield farm shops to try:
Bolster Moor Farm Shop
The coffee shop is famed for its bacon butties and has won a whole string of awards. It has sliding glass doors that can be opened in good weather, creating al fresco dining. It serves Fairtrade coffee and hot beef sarnies, as well as pies and mushy peas, cakes and milkshakes. There are animal lunchboxes for little ones. Open 9am until 4.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am until 4.30pm Saturday and 9am until 4pm on Sunday.
Hinchliffe’s Farm Shop
Netherton Moor Road, Netherton
One of the country’s original farm shops, Hinchliffe’s has a long tradition of selling home-grown meats and eggs. Having survived a catastrophic fire in 2010 the business is now running from temporary, although quite smart, premises. The restaurant is in lush surroundings, has its own children’s farm, and serves hearty breakfasts as well as sarnies, lighter bites and steaks. Open from 9am until 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am until 5pm on Sundays.
Thorncliffe Farm Shop
Just two years old, the smart Tasting Room Cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating and is run by the sixth generation of the farming family. The farm produces up to 70% of all the produce sold and served on the premises. Classic farmhouse breakfasts (veggie option available), hot and cold sarnies and afternoon tea are all available – with a glass of something fizzy if required. Open Monday to Thursday (and Saturday) from 8.30am until 4pm, Friday from 8.30am until 4.30pm, and Sunday from 10am until 4pm.
Brosters Farm Shop
Haigh House Hill, Lindley Moor
As well as specialising in Yorkshire-reared meat, this butchery-based business also has its own bakery producing bread, pies and pastries daily. The cafe serves all-day breakfasts, lunches and cakes and is particularly proud of its home-cooked roast beef served with individual gravy pots. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 4.30pm, Saturday 9am until 4pm, and Sunday 10am until 3pm.
Villa Farm Shop
Bradley Bar, Huddersfield
The Old Forge Cafe, tucked away in the farm courtyard, offers home-produced meat and eggs and home-cured bacon and a menu replete with hearty food, with daily specials offering soup, stews and meat, more meat, and cheese platters. While vegans won’t find much to eat this is a business that prides itself on offering gluten-free products. Open 9am until 4pm Monday to Saturday.
