Tough tackling Huddersfield Giants met their match as they took on an ultra-spicy chicken wing eating challenge.

The players mopped their brows and reached for drinks of cooling milk as they took on all-comers at a charity event at Nando's restaurant in Huddersfield town centre.

Players were also on hand to serve food and drinks to more than 75 fans at an event on Monday evening to raise money for the Huddersfield Community Trust.

The event was so popular that a second sitting was organised after tickets sold out in just a few days.

The first group of guests were welcomed by Huddersfield Giants players Sebastine Ikahihifo, Michael Lawrence, Liam Johnson and Ryan Brierley, followed by Eorl Crabtree, Darnell McIntosh, Jake Conner and Oliver Roberts who welcomed the second group.

As well as serving up dinner, guests got to know a bit more about their favourite players after a game of Knowing Me, Knowing You and were given the chance to take on the Giants in a hot chicken wing challenge.

The event raised over £1,000 which will be match funded by Barclays.

The money raised will go to Huddersfield Community Trust, who aim to improve the wellbeing and fitness of the people of Kirklees by actively tackling obesity, encouraging community cohesion and raising aspirations.

Jonathan Timms, head of community development at Huddersfied Giants Community Trust, said: "The event was a huge success and a massive thanks goes to the team at Nando’s for making it happen.

"The players had a great time and really enjoyed interacting with the fans. Though I think a couple of them will be keeping away from the hot wings for a while."

Lisa Hewitt, chief executive of Huddersfield Community Trust, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the support and fund-raising efforts from Huddersfield Giants Community Trust.

"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that got involved; a fantastic amount was raised which will go towards new sensory equipment.

"The equipment will be made available to children in the local community with special needs.

Giant player Eorl Crabtree said: "It was great to meet the fans. It was a bit strange for them as they are used to watching us but here we are watching them and waiting on them.

"For us players it has been a good laugh."
