IT IS 60 years since the Queen’s Coronation and it is an anniversary Holmfirth is determined to celebrate.

A concert is being held at Holmfirth Parish Church next weekend to mark the Coronation and the Queen’s achievements.

It is a joint venture between Holmfirth Parish Church and Holmfirth Choral Society.

Together they will stage a Musical Celebration in the church on Saturday June 8 at 7.30pm.

Holmfirth Choral Society will sing music, ancient and modern, taken from coronations over the years.

The choir will be conducted by its musical director, Dr Geoffrey Lockwood.

The singers will be accompanied by the Valley Sinfonia in what Dr Lockwood thinks is the first time the Choral has sung in the church accompanied by an orchestra.

The programme will include Handel’s four Coronation Anthems, Parry’s I Was Glad, and several other pieces.

All the pieces have been chosen from music performed at the last five coronations in Westminster Abbey.

There will as you might expect, be plenty of work for the orchestra’s trumpeters along with organ solos.

Organisers say it would not be a special celebration if there was no audience participation so they have that covered too with well known pieces included for all to join in and sing.

The event is being supported by three Holmfirth businesses and Holme Valley Parish Council.

Tickets priced £6 can be purchased from The Choral Society Ticket Secretary tel. 01484 687643, Andrew’s Greengrocer, Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth or Sid’s Café, Church Yard, Holmfirth.
