This weekend freshers will wave goodbye to mum and dad and prepare for life at the University of Huddersfield.

Moving out for the first time can be daunting - what with having to cook, clean and generally fend for yourself, students will spend their final days at home preparing for the next step in their lives.

But what should you take with you?

Top packing tips from HSU:

  • Don't bother buying kitchen appliances straight away or you'll end up with six kettles. If your communal area doesn't already come with one, you can all pitch in a split the cost.
  • Also, don't spend too much on them, as you don't want to end up fighting about who gets to keep it when you all leave.
  • Don't bring anything too precious, like family heirlooms - no matter how much you think you can look after your stuff, you don't know who you'll be living with.
