JAZZ returns to the Lawrence Batley Theatre tomorrow in the exciting hands of the Andy Panayi Quartet.
This is an outstanding and much sought after group featuring some of the finest young musicians around.
Their repertoire includes many well - known jazz standards and tomorrow’s programme will range from the music of Cole Porter to that of Thelonius Monk.
The quartet has performed at Ronnie Scott’s and all the principal jazz venues in the London area.
The quartet is headed by Andy Panayi, a saxophonist and flautist whose skills have seen him perform and record with a range of artists including Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney.
Andy is known for his outstanding musicianship, his gift for arrangement and his versatility on flute and saxophone.
He’s a former winner of the John Dankworth Award for Soloist and a British Jazz Award winner.
With him in Huddersfield will be David Newton on piano, Mark Hodgson on bass and Steve Brown on drums.
David studied at Leeds College of Music and has since performed alongside a who’s who of jazz names. He too has picked up the Dankworth solo award in the British Jazz Awards.
Mark studied music at the Guildhall School of Music in London and has since become one of the most sought bassists in the country. He works regularly alongside major British jazz artists.
Similarly sought after are the drumming talents of Steve Brown whose talents have also been recognised in the country’s biggest jazz awards.
He has worked extensively in the jazz world and is heard on many recordings.
