JAZZ fans are in for a treat tomorrow when singer Julie Edwards returns to the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

It is some time since Yorkshire-based Julie first appeared at Huddersfield Jazz as a talented young vocalist at the start of her career.

Now she returns as a fully- fledged jazz star with an enviable reputation for her singing and a bunch of jazz devotees such as broadcaster Michael Parkinson and the late Humphrey Lyttelton.

Derbyshire-born Julie teamed up several years ago with saxophone player, now guitarist, Kevin Dearden.

Theirs proved an ideal match, personally and musically. Together they have produced three CDs which have been broadcast widely.

The Julie Edwards/Kevin Dearden Quintet includes a rhythm section of talented northern musicians – Edward Barnwell on piano, Geoff Chalmers on double bass and Hugh Lawrence on drums.

With a degree in psychology, Julie studied at Leeds College of Music between 1994 and 1997 on a Postgraduate Diploma, where she says she discovered a passion for jazz.

Kevin took up saxophone at 20, studying with jazz educator Richard Ingham.

Now a saxophone teacher, he also coaches student big bands. He has recently added jazz guitar to his repertoire.
