HADE EDGE Band will be centre stage tomorrow (July 7) for a gala evening of classics from stage and concert hall.

Enjoy a Night At The Proms with the band plus Australian opera singer Martene Grimson and 18 year old baritone David Fearn, a member of Huddersfield Youth Opera and a vocal scholar at the Royal College of Music in London.

Huddersfield contralto Barbara Brook, who sings with Huddersfield Choral Society and is a well-known soloist, is also on the bill at Moldgreen United Reformed Church.

The concert, which is also a tribute to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, will be compered by Ken Greenwood, an accomplished actor and producer who has worked extensively with companies across the area.

The concert will showcase the talents of Hade Edge Band conducted by Simon Wood.

This 30-strong championship section brass band is recognised as one of the best in the area and, in addition to its senior band, has three junior ensembles, a community choir and a percussion group.

Simon has been conducting the band since 1999 and his two children are involved in the band.

His son, Aaron who is 18, will feature in tomorrow’s concert, playing the flugel horn solo in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez which featured in the film, Brassed Off.

“Aaron started playing when he was seven,” said Simon.

“He started playing in the senior band when he was 13. He’s playing superbly well.

“He’s going to the Royal Northern in September to study trumpet. We do lots of professional gigs together. But he’s also done a lot of teaching for the band with the youngsters. For the last two years he’s tutored some of the beginners so he’s put a lot back into the band.”

“It should be a really good concert. We are playing for most of Martene’s solos and the band have found her really easy to work with.

“We shall be playing the Jubilee March and Walton’s Crown Imperial as well as giving a taste of the Wild West with some of Ennio Morricone’s music. It’s wonderful stuff and it has some great tunes in it,” he said.

There will also been a full Proms’ style finale. The concert begins at 7.30pm.
