STUCK for a fresh idea for giving your mum a special treat on Mother’s Day?

Well the Yorkshire West Group of the National Association of Choirs reckon you couldn’t do better than take her to Huddersfield Town Hall on Sunday April 3 (2.15pm) to listen to 600 singers from 19 local choirs.

The concert is in aid of Combat Stress, the organisation chosen by the Mayor of Kirklees Councillor Andrew Palfreeman for his charity appeal.

The concert is called A Choral Celebration and features seven ladies choirs, Rodillians, Denby Dale, Horbury, Vocal Expressions, Almondbury, Pennine and Marsh, seven male voice choirs, Colne Valley, Elland, Featherstone, Honley, Micklefield, Sharlston and Skelmanthorpe plus five mixed voice choirs, Halifax Young Singers, Holme Valley Singers, Huddersfield Singers, Huddersfield U3A and Wakefield Amateur Operatic Chorus.

There are so many singers involved that some of them will be sitting in the town hall area seats.

But it means there will still be about 700 seats for concertgoers.

Combat Stress was formed in 1919 to help the thousands of men who had suffered immense psychological damage as a result of their experiences in the First World War.

Clr Palfreeman says: “Combat Stress provides treatment and residential care and gives valuable support to the many ex-service personnel who suffer a range of mental injuries including injuries post traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.

“I decided to make it my charity appeal because I realised what a wonderful job they do in helping the many veterans who served in Iraq and Northern Ireland and other theatres of war and who often re-live the horrors they experienced for the rest of their lives.”

Tickets, £5 to £10, from the information centre at Huddersfield library (01484 223200) and other Kirklees booking offices.
